Blog 8: A subject you enjoyed studying this semester

Imagen
Hi everyone, Today you're going to talk about a subject you enjoyed studying this semester. A subject I enjoyed a lot in university was "Caribbean Film and Literature" I thought it was an amazing course and I learned a lot. We watched films made by Caribbean film makers and read essays, novels, and short stories by different Caribbean writers. I got very inspired by that class as many of you may have realized. But for example, writers like Jamaica Kincaid, Christian Campbell, and Olive Senior I use in many of my courses. I like these writers for different and various reasons. I like Kincaid because she writes well and always writes about controversial topics. I like Jamaica Kincaid because she always talks about anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism. Christian Campbell is very good because he talks about racism in the United States, but also about the Caribbean world.  Here is a picture of Kincaid and my favorite book of hers: Write about your favorite subject this term...

Blog 7: A Career-Related Website OR an Expert in Your Field

Imagen
Hi everyone, I hope all is well with you. Today, we are going to talk about a career related website OR an expert in your field of study. I can't think of one specific website, so I will talk about a couple I use. One is the New Yorker Magazine, here is where I take short-stories that I use for class. Some of my favorite English-language writers have written in this magazine like Jamaica Kincaid, Junot Díaz, and Edwidge Danticat. The only problem about the website is that after like 6 monthly visits they want to charge you :( Another website I like is The Nation Magazine, it is a progressive American magazine where you can get good news from. I have used articles from this magazine in other courses to talk about certain current events like the right-wing protests in Venezuela last year. Lastly, there is Zinn Education Project, Howard Zinn is the author of the book, "People's History of the United States" which is exactly what the name says hahahaha. The website is goo...

Blog 6: How Can Your Major/Career Make the World a Better Place

Imagen
Hi everybody :) Today we are going to talk about how your major can make the world a better place. I think teachers can make the world a better place by showing things that students normally don't see on TV. But to do that also may mean to teach things that the school authorities wouldn't like us teaching to students like for example, teaching about feminism and how racism works economically. In the case of English teaches, I think we have to remember that nothing is neutral and therefore we have to take positions on many things, especially the role of the United States in the world. In class, I try to use materials that show how the United States has negatively influenced the world (think how Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship was supported by the USA). Also, it's important to show that English isn't just from the USA or England, but also from many Caribbean countries (like we have seen in class) and many African countries, as well. I think that teaching English is go...

Blog 5: A photograph you like

Imagen
i everyone! I hope you are well Today we're going to talk about a photo that you like. A friend of mine took this picture of me and my cat last year. This is my cat/daughter, Idania <3. I named her Idania for Idania Fernández, a revolutionary from Nicaragua. I was reading and Idania decided to join me and so I told my friend to come  take a picture of us because we look so adorable hahahaha. Idania is my first pet and she is really special to me. She is 2 years old, but she is still a baby, but now she is huge. She weighs 4 kilos! (and I pick her up all the time and I can feel those 4 kilos) She is great company and is a very sweet cat. She sleeps right next to me at night or on top of me. She is like a baby, in fact I only call her Idania when she's bad, usually I call her "guagua" because she cries for me to pick her up in my arms. I talk to her in Spanish and English just like my mom did to me when I was younger. Now it's your turn to share! Write about your...

Blog 4: A Meal or Food You Really Like

Imagen
Hi everyone :) I hope you are doing well these days! Today we are going to talk about our favorite food :O So I will talk about my not guilty pleasure: Pollo Chang. It is a fast-food Taiwanese restaurant chain here in Santiago. Their best food is fried chicken and they have a special spicy powder that they put on it. You can get the fried chicken in a form of a chicken breast, fingers, or mini pieces similar to popcorn chicken. It is to live for. It has a unique taste and it is so delicious and makes me happy when I eat it. I go to this place at least once a week near my house (Arturo Prat) and they know me by my name xd. It's great because they give me extra pieces of chicken sometimes <3 They also sell bubble tea which is a cold tea (red or green) with fruit flavor (raspberry, pineapple, lemon, strawberry, passion fruit, and other flavors) and they have these little gummies that are called "bubbles". This food obviously isn't that great for your health, buuuuut i...

Blog 3: My favorite piece of technology

Imagen
Hi everyone! Today we are talking about technology :) I think my favorite piece of technology is my iPod. I use it all the time to listen to music and it's almost like a companion to me. I've had it since 2013, so that is about 8 years. I always use it on the way to work, if I'm walking or taking the bus or the metro. It entertains me during long and tedious trips. I also use it when I go out on long walks throughout the city (I've walked to the Parque Bicentenario from Santiago) At home, I use it to read because it keeps me focused, which I know sounds weird because music usually distracts people. Something very weird is that I try to listen to a full album when I go on long trips or when I read. I love using my iPod even though it is very old and I recommend using it or a MP3 player because by using them you have more space on your cellphone :) Now it's your turn! Write about your favorite piece of technology Say: Why is this your favorite piece of technology? How...

Blog 2: Why did you choose this career?

Imagen
Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing well! Today we are going to talk about why you chose the career that you're studying right now. I remember when I was younger I wanted to be a rabbi XD. I don't know why I did, but then after a while I realized that I would like to teach languages since I loved learning them myself. After the student movement 2011, I was very sure that I wanted to be a teacher. So after studying Latin American Literature, I decided to study Teaching, but I didn't know if I wanted to teach Spanish Language or English as a second language. I talked to many people and decided that it would be best to go for the second option. So I studied in the program, Certification of English Teaching to Adults in the Institute of British-Chilean Culture in Santa Lucía.  I am very happy with the decision I made because I love teaching English and I love to teach about the history and cultures of the English-speaking world.   Now it's your turn: Write about: - your d...
